Medics are recording an increase in new coronavirus infection cases in the Lugansk People’s Republic due to population migration, LPR chief sanitary officer Dmitry Dokashenko told Vesti Plus Lugansk radio.

Earlier, the Republic recorded up to 20 new COVID-19 cases daily; the figure increased to 50 in the week before last, while the current daily rate has jumped to 100 since last week, Dokashenko said.

“We note a surge in the illness due to strong migration processes that involve residents who return to the LPR after holidaying in other countries and those who return from the Ukrainian territory, Dokashenko said.

He added that both Russia and Ukraine had posted an increase in COVÏD-19 cases.

The World Health Organization called the COVID-19 coronavirus infection a pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus. The first coronavirus infection cases were recorded in China in late 2019. The number of coronavirus contacts across the world has exceeded 194 million by now; of those, over 4.1 million people died, according to the WHO. The LPR confirmed 6,245 COVID-19 cases.

To prevent the spread of the coronavirus infection, the LPR authorities have put the Republic on high alert and introduced lockdown measures. *i*s
