The Lugansk People’s Republic Supreme Court sentenced a Donetsk resident recruited by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) to ten years. The man infiltrated the Republic during the prisoner exchange in December 2019, the LPR Prosecutor General’s Office press service reported.
“The PGO supported the indictment against the Donetsk resident charged with espionage (Article 336 of the LPR Criminal Code). The sentence was passed on the strength of the body of evidence and his contribution to exposing a network of SBU agents,” the report said.
In 2019, “he was recruited by agents of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). Later on, he used a cover story to arrive in the LPR as a participant of the December 2019 prisoner exchange to spy for the SBU,” prosecutors said.
From January to July 2020, the defendant gathered information on the strength and location of LPR militia units and active LPR People’s Militia members. “The defendant received remuneration for his work from an SBU officer,” the PGO said.
In July 2020, the defendant, winning the trust of several militiamen, joined military service in order to gather sensitive information on a militia unit, but his espionage activity in the LPR was stopped.
