The Leningrad siege survivors living in Alchevsk have received presents and food kits from Lugansk People’s Republic Acting Head Leonid Pasechnik, on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the lifting of the blockade, the Alchevsk Town Hall said in a post on Telegram.
“Valentina Drovareva, Vera Konovalova, Svetlana Geyenko have experienced all hardships and survived in the besieged Leningrad during the Great Patriotic war,” the Town Hall said.
The presents and food kits were handed in by Alchevsk mayor Albert Apshev, WWII veterans and officials.
“Recollections of veterans, their steadfastness and courage have been an example for several generations of Alchevsk residents. They remind about the heavy price paid for the Great Victory,” Town Hall official said.
The siege of Leningrad by German troops lasted 872 days beginning from September 8, 1941. The Red Army broke through the encirclement on January 18, 1943 and the blockade was fully lifted on January 27, 1944. The day of full Leningrad liberation is celebrated in Russia as Day of Military Glory.
There are 17 Leningrad siege survivors living in Alchevsk at the present time.*i*v
