Russian air defense units have shot down 39 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles in the special military operation zone including the territory of the Lugansk People’s Republic over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry reported.   “Air defense units intercepted four high mobility artillery rocket system (HIMARS) projectiles,” the report said. “Thirty-nine Ukrainian drones were eliminated in the  areas of Nikolayevka, Zolotaryovka, Novozvanovka and Kremennaya in the Lugansk People’s Republic, Berestovoye, Kodema and Alexandrovka in the Donetsk People’s Republic, Novaya Kakhovka in the Kherson region and Mirnoye and Trudovoye in the Zaporozhye region.”   On the Kupyansk axis, Task Force “West” units repelled five attacks by assault units of four Ukrainian army brigades in the areas of Sinkovka in the Kharkov region and Novosyolovskoye and Raigorodok (LPR). Enemy losses amounted up to 65 servicemen, four infantry fighting vehicles, two cars, one D-20 howitzer and one US-made AN/TPQ-50 counterfire radar.   “On the Krasny Liman axis, Task Force “Center” units, aircraft, artillery and heavy flamethrower systems repelled two attacks by 63rd Mechanized Brigade south of the Chervonaya Dibrova settlement in the Lugansk People’s Republic. The Ukrainian army lost more than 50 servicemen, three armored fighting vehicles and two D-30 howitzers,” the Defense Ministry said.   ***   The Ukrainian government launched the so-called anti-terrorist operation against Donbass in April 2014.  The peace talks failed to reach tangible results due to Kiev’s position to settle the conflict by force.   President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operation on February 24, 2022 to protect Donbass residents from Ukrainian aggression. Prior to that, LPR and DPR Heads Leonid Pasechnik and Denis Pushilin asked the Russian leader to provide military assistance.*i*ie
