Three football teams from the Lugansk People’s Republic will take part in the New Regions League championship, LPR Football Union Director Yury Malygin told the Lugansk Media Center.

“The joint championship brings together the Lugansk and Donetsk People’s Republics and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions,” Malygin said. “The LPR is fielding three seasoned teams: Shakhtyor Sverdlovsk, Zarya Lugansk and Metallurg Alchevsk.”

Three teams from the Donetsk People’s Republic will take part in the championship and the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions will put up two teams each, he said.

“Zarya is the brand name of our Republic, Shakhtyor is the Donbass League winner, LPR champion and LPR Cup winner and Metallurg which represents the Student League was praised as the most promising youth team in 2022,” Malygin said.

“We have suspended the LPR Cup due to the current situation because the safety of our people has priority, but football training goes on,  Zarya continues to participate in the Rostov-on-Don championship and everything goes as planned,” the LPR Football Union official said.

The Lugansk People’s Republic, Donetsk People’s Republic and Zaporozhye and Kherson regions acceded to Russia on September 30, 2022 following the unification referenda.*i*sb
